Why Lose Weight?

Do you look in the mirror and you just don't like what you see? An inflatable tube has taken up residence on your waist, and your butt seems to have dropped a couple of inches. You take a look at your face and you start to see the development of a little bit of waddle underneath the chin.

What do you do? Why is this happening? Better yet, what is happening to my body when I gain weight? These are all fantastic questions that are going to be answered on how to lose weight, and keep it off.

Many people ogle the beautiful bodies on the beach - men and women alike. Nice, tight round bottoms, flat stomachs and well toned bodies.

I'll be honest, there are some who don't need to do a darn thing and they stay in relatively good shape, but for the vast majority of people need to take notice of what they eat, how much they eat, and how much daily exercise they are getting.

Why does our weight matter so much to us? Probably for two reasons - physical appearance and health.

Physical appearance

No one really wants to be fat - plain and simple. For many people physical appearance is linked directly to their self-esteem. If they believe their body is undesirable to others, they can become depressed, or stressed and it causes serious emotional problems. Worse yet, in some people, it can trigger the impulse to eat even more, making the problem even worse.

The emotional side of being obese is only just being charted in the medical world. It is already understood that a person's self-worth and self-confidence can be shattered if they gain excess weight...But the emotional toll it can take over an extended period of time might be considerably more damaging.

Here's a quick test to see if you have experienced some sort of emotional response to weight gain:

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought, "I am so ugly".

Are you comfortable with the way you look when you look in the mirror?

Are you concerned with what your partner thinks of your body?

Are you conscious of other people looking at your when you go out, or are seen in public?

If you answered yes to any of those questions, it is obvious that your weight has some sort of emotional control over you. I don't think anyone wants his or her physical appearance to have that kind of control.

So, as I see it, a person has two choices: Do something about it, or live with it and the potential ongoing emotional turmoil.

I would strongly suggest doing something about it, and we are going to show you how.

Health Concerns

You have no doubt heard the numerous health-related problems that come from being overweight. Even being 20 lbs overweight can start to cause hidden health problems.

Instead of that lower back pain being from yesterday's squash game, it's because your body isn't used to carrying an extra 20 lbs on the front end. Imagine, right now, if you were to strap a 20 lb weight to your belly and walk around with it all day long.

An extremely increased weight can put considerable stress on your joints, especially if you aren't set up (height) to handle that sort of weight.

Then, we get to the biggies - heart disease, stroke and high blood pressure. Oh, and don't forget diabetes. These are pretty serious players in the health world. In fact, they are the largest killers of human beings in the world.

* Medical Fact:

In a study of 5881 people over a 14-year period, doctors revealed that someone who is merely 'overweight' has a 34% greater chance of heart failure. A person who is considered obese has a 104% increase in risk of heart failure over someone who is in their target weight range.

Do we have your attention?

Overweight and Obese

You might think, "What is the difference?" Medically speaking, there is a difference. Most doctors consider someone who is 20-30% over their ideal body weight to be obese. You are considered overweight if you are over 25 on the body mass index. That's anywhere from 5-15% over your ideal body weight.

Rather than try to tell you what your ideal body weight is, here is a great website that will tell you what your best weight would be (it also includes a table on BMI (body mass index)).

http://www.halls.md/ideal-weight/body.htm

Either way, you are at a much greater risk of having one of the above diseases by being overweight. If that isn't a reason why you should start trying to lose weight, I don't know what is.

So, if you've found that you are overweight or obese by doing the above calculations, and you are serious about losing those unwanted pounds, then you have a decision to make.

Is it time to take action and make changes to your lifestyle that are going to make you healthier and happier?

10 Weight Loss Tips for Permanent Weight Loss

1. Eat only when you are hungry.

This means stop eating the minute you are full. This means
if you go out to dinner and eat all the bread in the
breadbasket you don't eat your dinner. This means if it is
lunch break at work and you aren't hungry don't eat. This
means if you are in the middle of a sandwich and you are no
longer hungry, you stop eating.

2. When you aren't hungry and eating for joy only, make
sure you are eating something fantastic and tasting every
bite.

There will be times when you want to eat just for the joy
of it. I say if you only do this 10% of the time you can
still lose weight. But the trick is to make sure you enjoy
each bite, taste it fully and stop as soon as the joy of
eating it fades. If you pay attention, you will be
surprised how soon this might be.

3. Be curious about yourself-not judgmental.

When you do something that you think is "off" you plan of
what you would like to be doing, be curious and try to find
out why you do what you do. Explore the thoughts that lead
to the action. Be kind and understanding with yourself.
Give yourself the benefit of the doubt.

4. Believe it is possible to be thin without being mean to
yourself.

You do not have to beat yourself into submission for
thinness. In fact, I have found the opposite is true.
Loving yourself and being kind to yourself is a much better
path to permanent weight loss.

5. Feel your feelings.

Be anxious. (Don't eat.) Be sad. (Don't eat.) Be afraid.
(Don't eat.) Be angry. (Don't eat.) If you use eating as
an alternative to feeling you are most likely going to be
overweight. The sooner you feel your feelings the sooner
they will subside.

6. Stop expecting things "out there" to change so you can
feel better.

Don't wait for a better job, a thinner body, a nicer
husband or a better tasting diet in order to be happy. You
can be the source of your own joy by finding out what you
love to do and who you love to be. By living your own
truth, you can be happy no matter what is going on "out
there."

7. Even when you think you have "blown it" write down every
piece of food that goes into your mouth and then read that
list with fascination.

It may feel better to write in the food journal when you
are eating fuel most of the time, but that is not when it
is the most important. When you are fog eating and storm
eating and binging and going crazy with food, you have the
best opportunity to learn about yourself and why you do
what you do. No matter how much you have eaten and no
matter how big the binge was, write down every single thing
that went into your mouth and look at it with kind
curiosity.

8. Realize that eating when you aren't hungry is not
satisfying hunger or comforting you-it's just making you
heavy.

Notice the terminology you use when discussing food. " I
had my chocolate fix." " I needed comfort food." "I
wanted to give myself a treat." Food is not a good source
of emotional comfort and it cannot fix you.

9. Remember the past does not equal the future

We have all been on many many diets. Many of us have been
heavy a long time. This does not mean that you can't lose
weight. You have been doing the best you can. And when you
know better- you do better- and you look better….

10. Never give up!

Enough said.

On Your Way To Weight Loss: What to Do Before You Begin

Whether you've been on a diet or not, it's important to understand that not every attempt at weight loss is successful. Many people fail at dieting, therefore, it's important to make some preparations ahead of time to try to ensure that your weight loss efforts are successful.

Setting Realistic Goals

Setting realistic and attainable goals for yourself before you begin your diet is important to your weight loss success. It should be stressed that the key words here are realistic and attainable. For example, you are much more likely to succeed if your goal is to lose four pounds in four weeks than if you were to try to lose eight pounds in four weeks. Nutritionists agree that anything more than a pound a week is not healthy and that you might be doing more harm to yourself than good if you try to lose weight any faster than that. Experts agree that weight loss goals should be SMART: specific, measurable, achievable, relevant and time specific.

Additionally, when you have reached your goals always give yourself a non-food related reward to help you keep your motivation up.

Decide On An Exercise Program

Before you begin your diet, it may be a good idea to decide on an exercise program that you enjoy. Remember that exercise is a vital part of losing weight. Exercise helps you to tone muscles and tighten loose skin that might ordinarily become flabby as you lose weight. Furthermore, exercise helps you to burn fat faster and more efficiently. Keep in mind, also, that if you want to keep the weight off that you lost during your diet, you're going to need to exercise long after you've finished your diet to keep from regaining the weight.

Whichever kind of exercise program you choose, make sure it is something that you enjoy. It stands to reason that you are much more likely to continue to participate in an activity that you enjoy as opposed to an activity that you dislike.

Motivation

One reason that many people fail at dieting is because of lack of motivation. If you constantly feel that you are being deprived of food, you will quickly succumb to your desire to eat foods that are not right for you during your diet. Instead, try to motivate yourself by reminding yourself of how much better you will feel when you've reached your weight loss goals. Remind yourself of how great you will look when you can slip into a new dress or new pair of slacks that are two sizes smaller than you are right now.

Furthermore, it may be helpful to set weekly and monthly goals for yourself. Additionally, when you reach those goals, reward yourself for achieving them. Whether that goal is treating yourself to some fun entertainment or buying yourself a new outfit, it really doesn't matter. The important thing is you reward yourself for your successes.

Final Words

As you prepare to go on your diet, think of yourself as an Olympic athlete. You will need to learn to conquer your fears and insecurities. You will also need to learn new skills, goal-setting and a whole lot more. Each aspect is just as important as the other. However, always remind yourself of how good you will feel and how proud of your accomplishments you will be when you get to the finish line.

Why Water Is The Secret Weight Loss Miracle

The weight loss battle is one that is fought by many all over the world and is easily one of the toughest fights you will ever have. Time after time the weight is lost and put back on in a matter of months and to make matters worse, many times you end up weighing more than you did when you began your weight loss program. Because of this many people will look for any tips or advice they can find to help them win the battle of the bulge. While there is a lot of advice available, one of the best tips at all is to include adequate water intake as a regular part of your diet plan.

Did you know that just plain water speeds up your metabolism? This is just one of the many reasons that water is so crucial to a successful diet. Let me explain why. The liver has the ability to convert the fat it has stored into energy that your body can burn off, but it cannot function properly without enough water. The liver is responsible for a great deal of processes in the body including taking care of the kidneys if they aren't functioning properly.

Well, guess what? The kidneys cannot do their job without water and therefore if you are not drinking enough water you are forcing your liver to work harder in order to take care of the kidneys. If this is happening, the majority of its focus is here and not on converting fat to energy which results in no weight loss and possibly may even lead to weight gain.

Water intake is also a good way of helping to curb your appetite between meals and also help you to eat smaller portions. If you keep your stomach full of water all day long it helps to trick your body into believing that it is full of food so the hunger mechanism is harder for the brain to detect. If you drink a couple of glasses of water before a meal you won't feel like stuffing yourself.

I know that many people think that if they restrict water intake it will help them lose water weight nut in fact the opposite is true. Your body goes into survival mode and will retain all the water it can if you don't give it enough, therefore it is vital that your water intake be sufficient.

Now that I have sold you on the idea that you need water to lose weight you are probably wondering how much you should take in. For most adults you need to consume 64 ounces a day, or a gallon. The easiest way I have found to do this and be sure you are getting enough is to fill a gallon jug with water every morning and drink from it throughout the day making sire that you finish it off before you go to bed. Try to keep it cold as this also aids in burning more calories. Water is truly a weight loss miracle, try it and you will see for yourself.
