Why Can't I Lose Weight? 3 Common Diet Sabotage Traps

Diet Sabotage - it's far too common these days. If you find
yourself asking - Why can't I lose weight? - chances are you may
be suffering from one of these common diet sabotage traps:

1) Embarrassment - Admitting that you're trying to lose weight
is an embarrassing thing for many people. They feel too ashamed
to go to the gym or walk into a well-known weight loss clinics.

In our society, it seems like being heavy is a cardinal sin. If
you're not stick thin, there's something wrong with you.
Ridiculous. People who are overweight are not lazy nor do they
lack self control - however the odds are stacked against them.
Huge portion sizes, high stress lives, jobs where you sit for
hours, and food advertising shoved in your face 24-7. It's a
wonder everyone isn't overweight.

Being overweight is nothing to be ashamed over. However if you
are embarrassed to lose weight in front of others, don't let
that stop you from slimming down. Lots of people lose weight
without joining a gym or seeing a weight loss counsellor. Many
people do it in the comfort of their own homes. They either
start a diet plan quietly on their own or order from a diet meal
delivery service. Some even buy their own fitness equipment and
work out behind closed doors.

Remember, there's nothing to be embarrassed about when you're
losing weight. You should be commended for trying to change for
the better. But if you do feel more comfortable keeping it under
wraps, you should. You have lots of options that let you lose
weight in the comfort of your own home. Just don't allow
embarrassment to be a diet sabotage and stop you from reaching
your goal.

2) Lack of Time - One of the best things I ever heard a
nutritionist say is that losing weight takes extra time and
energy. Seems simple, yet no one does it. Lack of time is
probably the number one diet sabotage for most people. In order
to lose weight, you should be prepared to set aside some of your
time and energy (especially at the beginning) to focus on this
goal.

Any life change requires extra energy and time. When we're
making other life changes like moving or having a baby, we
expect this and we cut back accordingly on other things to make
room for this change to our lives.

However most people don't apply this to dieting. They think
they should be able to lose weight on the side as they go about
their busy lives. Then they beat themselves up when they don't
get the results they want.

If you're serious about losing weight, be prepared to set aside
some time and energy for this task - whether that's cancelling
an appointment so you can exercise, or getting up a bit earlier
so you can prepare a day of healthy meals. Whatever it is, you
can reap amazing results when you set aside extra time and
energy to achieve the body you want.

3) Wishing Vs Planning - This is a huge diet sabotager that no
one talks about. Most of us who want to lose weight have spent a
lot of time wishing we were thinner. We go about the day hoping
that extra piece of cake won't show up on our hips or that the
salad we ate for lunch will magically help us lose 5 pounds by
Saturday.

While there's nothing wrong with wishing, there is a big
difference in wishing vs planning. Wishing means you just hope
you lose weight - you might even make some half-hearted efforts
to cut back on portions or eat a salad or two.

Planning means you make a commitment. You decide that you're
going to make a change in your eating habits in order to achieve
your goal - no 'ifs', 'ands', or 'buts'. Committing to lose
weight means taking action. Wishing means you do nothing but
still hope it will happen 'someday'.

Losing weight is not rocket science and most people of average
health can do it. However, like any goal, you have to commit to
it and work every day to achieve it. This is one of the biggest
obstacles to losing weight.

Most people don't realize that there's a difference between
wishing and planning or committing. If you're truly committed
you will take the necessary steps day by day to achieve your
goal. You may not lose weight overnight but you will lose weight
over the long term. And in the process, you will have built up
valuable skills that you'll need to keep you slim once you do
achieve your goal.

So there they are - the 3 most common diet sabotagers. Ask
yourself if any of these obstacles are hindering you from losing
weight. If they are, address them and move on. You can lose
weight when you decide that nothing is going to stop you from
living your dreams.

Why Weight Loss Resolutions Don't Work

If you're like many people out there, you've promised
yourself to do something different this year. Probably to
drop a few pounds by eating better, exercising more and
living a healthier lifestyle.

And if you're like a good number of people who made
themselves a promise, you may have already broken it - you
may not have made it a week or through the month of January.

Even if you have stayed faithful to your promise so far,
chances are all your good intentions will go out the window
before you live up to your resolution...

That's why I don't make resolutions any more.

I set goals instead.

Here's the difference:

Resolutions usually don't work. Goals do.

Here's why:

Resolutions aren't specific enough. They also tend to be
absolute and rigid.

Resolutions tend to sound like this:

I will eat better this year.

Sounds like a great idea, doesn't it? But, what does
"better" mean? If you eat one less Cheeto or French fry
over 365 days, have you stuck to your resolution? I don't
think so. And, if you count that as success, you're just
cheating yourself.

So, you've failed. Because "eating better in 2008" means
to be perfect for the whole year. Hey, the first time a
slice of pizza or piece of candy passes your lips - your
resolution is a goner - better luck next year.

Goals, on the other hand, when written (note that term!)
the right way are specific and have a specific time
attached to them. That's what makes them powerful.

A goal might look like this:

I will weigh 175 by March 1, 2008.

Now you have a measurable goal and a time frame in which to
do it.

But, here's the real magic in goals. If you don't reach
that weight by that date... no problem. Simply extend the
date (and you don't have to wait all the way until the next
January one).

Will you have failed if you get down to your goal weight by
April 1st instead? Or May? Or June? I think not.

And what if you only make 176 by the first of March? Is
that so bad? I'll bet you made a lot more progress than
you would have without goals...

Most times, resolutions set you up to fail because they
require you to be perfect.

Goals set you up for success because they are fluid and
flexible - they allow you to be human while still moving
forward - as long as you keep the target in your sights.

If you've set resolutions already - change them to goals.

If you haven't set anything yet... well, you get the
picture.

Heed this advice and have your best year ever. Ignore it
and you'll watch another year pass you by without getting
where you want to go.

The Weight Loss Trap

It is a well known fact that any type of market is based on
one premise, and that is the formula of supply and demand.
When people want something, rest assured that there will be
someone out there more than ready to provide that
something. Never has this been truer than in the weight
loss industry. It is an industry that is like a carnivorous
animal that feeds on people's desperation to lose weight
and to live healthy lives.

For each worthwhile and helpful solution that this industry
provides, there is someone who in equal measure will offer
a solution that provides answers which promise success but
in reality the results are often the opposite. The aim of
the creators of certain products is to make as much money
as possible, and as quickly as possible. That money comes
from you. You pay your money because you are manipulated
into believing the pictures that they paint for you.
Admittedly the pictures they paint can be very convincing,
however you must remember that they have to be convincing.

There are so many products promising to help you lose
weight, this is done by planting a vision in your head.
This vision will come from what they make you see, what
they make you read, and endorsements from people in their
pay. However many of the products on offer have at best a
minimal effect, and at worst are completely useless, or
even dangerous.

People who want a quick and easy way of losing weight fall
foul of the clever advertising and the hope that this may
well be the product that is going to get them to shed the
pounds. The funny thing is that at a deep level, the people
who buy these products already know that they will not
work. It is incredulous that sane intelligent people keep
falling into the same trap over and over again. Yet they
keep buying in the minuscule hope that perhaps this new
product will work for them.

Let us look at some of the products that have been touted
as being the next best thing that is going to change your
life by giving you the body that you crave:

Diet Pills:

The market is awash with hundreds of dieting pills. Each
one making claims on how wonderful they are, and all of
them claiming how much better they are compared to their
competitors. There are pills that are meant to suppress
your appetite. There are pills that claim to stop your body
from absorbing the fat that you eat. There are pills that
will apparently work on sections of your brain to prevent
cravings. The thing to remember is that anything that you
put into your body will have some sort of effect. This
effect can be positive or it can be negative. Anything that
claims to change the natural physiology of your body must
be treated with caution and researched prior to consumption.

Also keep in mind that if you have spent years of living an
unhealthy lifestyle and are overweight because of it, the
chances of regaining any health by popping a few pills for
a couple of months are pretty poor to say the least. Pills
are not going to make you toned or give you a six pack.
Only exercise is going to do that. Finally be very cautious
of pills that claim to come from a natural source. You know
what I mean; we have all seen the descriptions of how
certain pills have been extracted from some rare plant
which is only found on some remote mountain in Peru. If
this plant is so rare how can a company manage to produce
millions of pills? Remember that cocaine, marijuana, and
various poisons come from natural sources. That does not
make them safe or an effective aid to weight loss.

Slimming Creams:

There were and possibly still are certain creams that were
marketed as weight loss aids. The idea was that by rubbing
this cream on certain areas of your body would enable you
to reduce fat. This has to be one of the biggest frauds
seen anywhere in any industry. It is farcical to think that
anyone can lose weight by such a product, but people still
paid good money for such products. Weight loss occurs when
you are burning more calories than you are consuming, it is
that simple. Of course you would lose a couple of calories
by the very movement of your hand as you rub the cream on,
but calorie reduction at that rate would be equal to losing
one pound in around 3 years. Clearly not the most effective
aid to weight loss.

Slimming Suits/Pants:

These products are not even weight loss products but still
sell in their thousands. This product is just false
perception that fools other people into thinking that you
may be slimmer than you are. This doesn't solve a thing;
all it does is to hide the problem temporarily. These
products may also be dangerous and uncomfortable, they do
not let your skin breathe, and can lead to overheating and
dizziness. The only way to get rid of a problem is to deal
with it and not to try and cover it up.

If you want to lose weight you need to think of real
solutions, and you already know what they are. The problem
is that most people who want to lose weight do not want it
to have an impact on their lifestyles. However it is
probably those lifestyles that have caused the problem in
the first place. Change can be difficult, our bodies and
minds do not like change, and we are safe in our comfort
zones and our habits. The reality is that change only lasts
for a short time, because whenever we start doing something
different, it is only a matter of time before that becomes
normality for us, and that becomes our habit and comfort
zone. The hardest part of any change is making the decision
to do something and sticking to it. If you want to
seriously lose weight then it is time to get serious about
doing so, or you can carry on doing what you have been
doing, ending up with the same results that you have always
had.

What Should You Know About Low Carb Diets?

If you've dieted at least once any time within the past few
years, there's a good chance that the diet you went on was one
of the many low carb diets that are around these days. Although
the very first of the low carb diets, the Atkins diet has been
around for at least 30 years, the trend for low carb diets has
only taken off very recently.

This can probably be accounted for by some media hype along
with a number of genuine success stories. And when you throw in
a celebrity or two into the mix, you've the makings of a new
fad. Everybody then jumps on the bandwagon which in this case
turned out to be low carb diets.

What you need to ask yourself if you're thinking of trying one
of these low carb diets is if the Atkins diet is so popular now,
and really works to help you in reducing your weight, why didn't
it gain in popularity long before this? After all it has been
around for as long as 30 years. That's a long tome for a diet to
be around without anyone noticing it until the later stages of
those 30 years.

And if these low carb diets are as good for you as all these
books and practitioners of the diets will tell you, then why is
there so much opposition to these diets from nutritional and
medical sources? These are questions that only you can answer if
you want to find out the truth, but if all you want to do is
lose some weight then these low carb diets are ideal for you.
The only thing you won't truly know for certain is what kind of
long term effects these low carb diets will have on your system.

Sure you'll reduce the weight and lose the fat off your frame,
but at what cost? And the Atkins diet isn't the only low carb
diet that you will find. There's the ever popular Zone diet, the
South Beach Diet, the Hollywood diet, the Stillman diet, and a
host of other low carb diets. These diets are all similar in
that they promote a high fat, high protein, and low carb intake.
Each diet has its own differences and quirks and which one you
try depends on what you've heard, or read, about these low carb
diets.

For the constant yo-yo dieter these low carb diets may be just
what they need, since despite any drawbacks that it might have
they do work, and they do help you to lose weight. If you're
going on a diet, and it doesn't matter overly much which diet it
is, you should always be sensible and diet sensibly too. Losing
a few pounds quickly won't help you in the long term. If you
keep to the guidance of these low carb diets though, your
dieting problems shouldn't be all that numerous and you might
even find that you've left them all behind.

How To Lose Weight After Pregnancy?

To lose weight after pregnancy is not always an easy thing. For
one thing, you have more or less spent the last nine months
indulging yourself, and pampering your hunger pangs.

It can become extremely difficult to go back to normal eating
habits after this, and you will find that it can take a large
amount will power and control on your part to accomplish this.

The first that you need to do therefore if you want to lose
weight after pregnancy is to make a conscious decision to lose
the weight. Unless you do this, you will find that you are not
really losing weight at all and instead that you are probably
gaining weight.

Just going with the flow and hoping that you will lose weight
because circumstances force you to eat less or exercise more, is
not going to work, because as soon as these circumstances change
once again, you will find that so too does your weight loss.

To truly lose weight after pregnancy, you need to follow a
sensible eating plan, something that will help you to shed the
pounds at a reasonable rate, and in a reasonable and healthy
manner.

This is really very important when you look at the overall goal
of your losing weight, because it must be said that to lose
weight quickly and in a manner that is unhealthy, can and most
likely will, produce problems for you later on.

A good rule of thumb when you are looking to lose weight after
pregnancy, is to follow the nine months rule. Since you took
nine months to put the weight on, it is therefore only feasible
to lose the weight in nine months, and not in two months or
something absurd along those lines.

Sure, the celebrity mothers lose their pregnancy weight in such
short time spans, but before you go around comparing yourself to
these new moms, you need to look take a close look at what is
really happening.

For one thing, they have a vested interest in regaining their
figures since it is literally their meal ticket. And for another
thing, they have the ability to hire the whole enchilada of
fitness trainers, dieticians, nutritionists etc. to look after
their welfare and to tell them the best and most healthy way to
lose weight after pregnancy.

Now, come back to you life and decide whether you have the
ability, the time or the money to do all of that. If you do,
then you can probably lose weight after pregnancy in no time at
all.

However, if you don't have the ability to do any of these
things, you should seriously consider losing weight in a healthy
manner. And the best way to lose weight after pregnancy in a
manner that is healthy and safe, is to do it at a slow and
steady pace, because ultimately you will also be able to keep
the weight off as well.
